Richard Gere and Carey Lowell to divorce after 'growing apart due to different lifestyles'

Richard Gere and his wife Carey Lowell
Split: Richard Gere and his wife Carey Lowell
Hollywood star Richard Gere and his wife Carey Lowell have separated and are planning on divorcing.
According to reports in the US the couple, who have been together for 18 years, split after growing apart over their different lifestyles.
The 64-year-old heartthrob is said to crave privacy pursuing his work for ecological causes and AIDS awareness.
Former Bond Girl Carey, 52, however enjoys “socializing with other bigwigs.”
A source said: “They have a place in up state New York which Richard loves as it is so quiet and it brings him a lot of solitude.
“Carey likes being elsewhere in the limelight. She is very sociable and although very much respects what Richard likes she loves being around people.”
The couple, who tied the knot in the November 2002 after dating for seven years, haven’t been seen together since the beginning of the year.
The most recent time was at the Golden Globe Awards in January.
No information of when the couple plan to divorce has been revealed.
The actor is said to be worth more than £30million while between them they have several expensive properties including one valued at more than £40million.
The couple have a 13-year-old son called Homer James Jigme Gere, named after Gere’s father, as well as the Tibetan name Jigme.
Last October Gere, a devout Buddhist, hit the headlines after a jealous husband berated him for allegedly chatting up his wife.
The American Gigolo star was at Nick & Toni’s diner in East Hampton when it is claimed he approached the pretty blonde.
Her husband became so incensed by Gere’s flirting he screamed “Get the f*** out of here”.
The actor married Carey, who appeared alongside Timothy Dalton in License to Kill in 1989, seven years after splitting in 1995 from his first wife Cindy Crawford.
He was married to the supermodel for fours years.
Soon after his secret wedding to Carey he said: “She’s changed my life. And marriage does have meaning, if you do it from your heart. It is a milestone for us both.”
Carey has been married three times. Her first husband was fashion photographer John Stember, who she split from in 1988.
A year later she married actor Griffin Dunne.
A spokesperson for Richard has declined to comment.

Richard Gere and Carey Lowell have split.

A friend of the couple, confirming that Gere and Lowell have separated, tells PEOPLE, "They'll do everything possible to keep things amicable and put their child first."

A rep for Gere had no comment.

The couple, married for 11 years, have been living apart for some time, with Gere, 64, staying at their property in Bedford, N.Y., and Lowell, 52, at their historic mansion in North Haven, N.Y., the New York Post reports.

Gere, a devout Buddhist, was said to enjoy his solitude, while Lowell, a former model and actress, enjoyed being more social, the paper reports, noting that the two have been living separate lives.

They wed in 2002 after dating for about seven years and are parents to son Homer, born in 2000.

They were last seen together publicly in June at a fundraiser in New York City.

Gere, named PEOPLE's Sexiest Man Alive in 1999, was previously married to supermodel Cindy Crawford. Lowell has two previous marriages: to fashion photographer John Stember and to actor-director Griffin Dunne, with whom she has a 23-year-old daughter, Hannah.

She may no longer be Richard Gere's pretty woman, but for Carey Lowell, life goes on.

The 52-year-old actress has made her first public appearance since news broke that she and Gere, 64, were calling it quits after 11 years of marriage.

On Tuesday night, Lowell attended the 19th annual Artwalk NY gala in downtown New York City. Dressed in a floral dress, black trench coat and strappy heels, she arrived solo to the charity event, which benefits the Coalition for the Homeless.

Lowell was a cochair for the benefit, alongside Alec and Hilaria Baldwin and model Coco Rocha. Interestingly, Gere was listed as the honorary chair for the event, although he was not in attendance.

In late September, a friend of the couple confirmed to PEOPLE that Gere and Lowell had separated. The two, who have a 13-year-old son, Homer, had reportedly been living apart for some time, with Gere staying at their property in Bedford, N.Y. Lowell, meanwhile, remained at their mansion in North Haven, N.Y.

"They'll do everything possible to keep things amicable and put their child first," the pal added.

Richard Gere and his soon-to-be ex-wife Carey Lowell continued their divorce proceedings on Friday, as they ignored each other entirely at Manhattan Supreme Court.

Actor Richard Gere and his estranged wife Carey Lowell were back in Manhattan divorce court Friday morning — fighting over money in their continuing bid to end their 11-year marriage.
“We had a nice chat with the judge. We’re moving along. It’s all about money,” said Lowell’s lawyer, Robert Cohen, as he left Manhattan Supreme Court with “Law & Order” actress.
Gere and his attorney, David Aronson, declined to comment, although the “An Officer and a Gentleman” star did banter briefly with a reporter as he left the courthouse through a back door.
The couple, who have one son, Homer, 15, sat about eight feet apart in the large paneled courtroom for more than a half hour as the lawyers conferred in a private back room with Justice Matthew Cooper.
Gere was buried in the New York Times. Lowell was immersed in The New Yorker.
Then the judge called the pair to join them.
When they emerged about 10 minutes later, Gere had a restrained scowl. Lowell was smiling slightly.
“I can’t say anything,” she said softly in a corridor afterwards.
Before she left the landmark courthouse at 60 Centre Street — where Lowell filmed many segments during her years on the long-running NBC drama — she got special permission from court officers to take pictures of the ornate ceiling mural in the rotunda.
Like the prosecutor that she played, she left through the front door, easing down the large outdoor stairway that was used as a backdrop many times by the hit TV show.

Richard Gere Divorce To Carey Lowell May Cost $100 Million As He Portrays Homeless Man In New Film

Richard Gere may have to shell out up to $100 million for his divorce. The big bucks break-up results from the Pretty Woman actor’s 11-year-marriage to Carey Lowell, reported the New York Daily News.

Lowell is best known for her role in Law & Order. Her attorney, Robert Cohen, emphasized that money is the key to settling the drawn-out divorce.

“We had a nice chat with the judge. We’re moving along. It’s all about money,” declared Cohen.
In contrast, Gere’s lawyer, David Aronson, had no comments.
Although actors are trained to show whatever emotions they wish their audience to see, Gere couldn’t refrain from a frown after meeting with the judge. In contrast, his ex-wife was smiling.

The soon-to-be-divorced duo have a 15-year-old son named Homer.

“I can’t say anything,” insisted Carey.

Ironically, the proceedings took place at a courthouse where the actress had been involved in filming Law & Order. To preserve her memories, she requested and received permission to photograph the famous rotunda’s ceiling mural before exiting graciously and gracefully through the often-filmed enormous outside staircase.

An Officer and A Gentleman star Gere, in contrast, dashed out the back entrance and leaped into a sleek black getaway car.

While the actor attempts to wrap up the divorce, he’s focused on his newest film, reported the Wall Street Journal.

In that movie, Gere portrays a homeless man, and he views it as part of his efforts to help Tibetan refugees.

“[They both are] displaced people…trying to find their place, trying to get back home.”

The film, Time Out of Mind, proved to be a revelation for Richard, who so convinced onlookers in New York City in his role as a homeless man that he was ignored.

“I was giving off the vibe of being homeless, and no one paid any attention to me,” recalled Gere.

Speaking at the Montclair Film Festival, he took pride in the movie, which will be released later in 2015.
However, despite his pride, he admits he was a failure in one area. Attempting to panhandle, Richard took in only $1.25 in 40 minutes.

Gere isn’t the only celebrity dealing with both negative news and positive publicity. As the Inquisitr reported, Bruce Jenner is facing a lawsuit from the deadly car accident in which he was involved.

The decision to sue Jenner for wrongful death comes in the wake of the highly positive feedback that Jenner received from his interview with Diane Sawyer, during which he described his transgender journey and explained why he had hidden his secret for so long.
